G-Land Bobby's Surf Camp had 18 people come in today and 7 people leave. Amongst new comers was my friend from my hometown of Taranaki, NZ, Jeremy Grainger. Its his first time in Indo, he just arrived in Kuta yesterday. Kuta freaked him out, he didn't like it one bit, but he's loving the natural atmosphere and setting of G-Land! I didn't really get to meet and greet Jeremy and the other guests, as there was a special mission happening!
The surf was massive. Big bombie sets going mad, the entire main break pretty washed out. The Rip Curl Padang Cup ran today in this bombing south west swell. The transport day was tricky with guests having to get ferried out of the 20-20's channel via the zodiac onto the fast boat and overland boat between sets. 20-20's was easily head high on the sets, and bigger on some. On the overland boat resident camp photographer Dave Thomas, his assistant Norris, and myself did a J.I. (join in) and hitched a ride over to Grajagan. Dave knows of a point break near the harbour entrance that can get pretty chunky. Perhaps it was because the swell was so West, it wasn't happening. So, thinking we were completely skunked, we watched the waves at the rivermouth. They looked like 1ft too fast to surf right handers. I went out to have a go anyway while Dave and Norris took photo's. It was heaps better than it looked! Head high, shallow sand bottom reeling rights?! And every wave was pretty much allowing 2-3 turns or you could just fang it all the way down the line.
I had so much fun out there by myself, in an hour I caught many waves. It wasn't until 10am I paddled out, so the wind came on it stronger after another hour and ruined it a bit. Tomorrow morning we are looking at running a special trip over there early while the wind is light and the tide is mid-low. No doubt a bunch of guests will be keen to tag along for something different. Considering Money Trees was washed out this afternoon (apart from one wave where a solo surfer got a good barrel, otherwise it was averagely burgered out), most guests will be happy to get a unique surf in tomorrow morning.
Late afternoon today I couldn't help but go down to 20-20's for a surf. All the guests had been down there at some point today. It was really fun! Solid 3ft and light offshore, not too many people when I was out either thankfully. Got a flurry of fun waves in a short time, then came back to camp.
