G-LAND ... Early morning alarm set for this morning and even an early night in bed last night. Swell coming in through the night and i was looking at some beautiful, moonlit waves running the reef from Moneytrees right on through Speedies. So i knew it would be worth the effort to wake up early. Out at dawn in my undies and frick it was cold. Straight back inside to put on a jacket and shorts cause otherwise i was goin back to bed. No exaggeration...it was cold!!!
Haven't had too many early surfs like this one in the last 15 years of my life. I think i was paddling out the lagoon by just after 6 AM and this paddle-out was well worth it!!! We had some clean early morning conditions matched up with another Launching Pad into Speedies session. Most all the waves were seamlessly running from the Pad into Speedies and even a few really hitting the second section at Speedies. It's always tough for me to call the size on a Pad/Speedies swell since the size difference between the 2 sections is ridiculous. I would have to call 12-15 foot faces on Launching Pad and Speedies about 6-8 foot faces...maybe bigger but beautiful none the less.
I can't even remember much happening up reef at Moneytrees, but i'm sure it was alive and working well. So to put the myth down about Speedies not being surfable on the lower tide, it happened once again. I don't mean "not surfable" to indicate it's sketchy or dangerous cause it's shallow...i mean that it normally gets washed out and bumpy from upreef sets and that creates the sketchiness and danger. Guys were surfing it through the 0.7 meter low and right on back through the 1.4 meter tide at sunset. Dawn was a 2.0 meter high just for the know. And there were some great waves piping off down the reef through those lower tides. I love when these sort of reminders silence thoughts of what we think G-Land "should" be like!!!
