Merdeka!! (Freedom!!). Today is perhaps the most significant day in Indonesia - Independence Day. When the Indonesian people took back the rule of their land from the Dutch back in 1944 on this day.
G-Land Bobby's Surf Camp had quite a few known names come in this morning on the change over. Makuakai & Koa Rothman, Marty Paradisis, Jason Childs, Mega Samadhi, Mustafa Jeckson and Mikala Jones were amongst the people who came in today. Also in the surf I seen Dean Morrison, Morehu Roberts and others all keen to sample what G-Land has to offer. My friend Ryan Watts is also here, from Taranaki. He's just been travelling through West Java, surfing waves such as One Palm Point. He'll be all tuned up into his tube riding if Speedies goes mental tomorrow!
The surf: It got pretty clean already by 8 or 9am, new swell was 5-6ft, and there was some nice waves coming down the reef. A fair amount of south in it, so Launching Pads was breaking often with some Speedies sections. I got out there about 10:30am and there were a few nice tubes coming through Speedies. Actually, a few guys caught some waves that were fricken insane barrels! And to think, tomorrow is mean't to be more south in the swell and twice the size...
Money Trees had waves especially on the outgoing tide, but by 3pm the wind went to sheet glass, and a haze came over the line-up, while the bombie started to grow bigger and bigger, with huge sets on it by late in the day - only just able to see them through the haze. Yet it was really sunny. And with these conditions on this Independence Day, that was just perfect for running the tree climbing event at 3:30! Teams of 4 got to try climb on each other and make human towers to reach the top. Prizes up the top won by locals and guests alike included crates of Bintang, Fast boat trips, Sightseeing tours in the Java Mountains, Stay in Superior packages, and more!
