G-Land was small this morning, 2-3ft MAXIMUM. Variable winds for awhile, then late morning onwards came some offshore winds. The early morning high tide with no wind was pretty average for the surf, and I finally clicked on what I could do in such situations. Take out the camp's SUP for a paddle!! I'd always wanted to try one especially for the core training I have heard it does. So I went and grabbed the Stand-up Paddle board with its Oar from camp and went out in the lagoon for a play. The thing is 9ft x 30" by perhaps 4"... quite a new model, and a proper oar for it too. Had a blast playing around with it, don't think I'd want to try catch waves in a hurry though!
By lunch time the sets were lining up better up reef and looking more like a solid 3ft. I surfed late in the afternoon, just after the 3pm low tide. And with this bit of incoming tide came some more swell again, and I ended up surfing pumping Kongs 3-4ft with a very sparse population spread out among it. Some There was even some barrels wedging up too! My 5'10 quad fin went brilliantly once again, slicing and carving with high speeds.
Its easy to forget how fun Kongs is! Not worrying about hitting the reef or getting pulverised by thick lips, and being able to let loose just like your at ya local, is a good feeling. Around 5pm there was so many waves coming through too... Water temp was medium, I was perfect in a spring suit.
Tomorrow is mean't to be bigger again, and next week, is some kind of south monster approaching, at this stage it could be 12ft Launching Pads coming into some bad ass Speedies...!
