Waaaahhhhoooooo the small wave jinx has been truly lifted! G-Land had bombing 8ft sets all day long with a few rogue 10ft sets, Money Trees was cranking! Some real big barrels, an offshore wind starting early... what a day! Some Money Trees waves I seen were insane.
Many people think the G-Land Surf is no good on Neep Tides. Well let me tell you today was a 0.9m low and a 1.7m high tide, a swell that was forecast to be a 'washout', yet most of today there was hardly any current, and some amazing waves being ridden. Sure you need a really high tide for Speedies, but the waves at Money Trees today were just big old barrels that you could stand up straight in some of them! Yet there was still a 'safe' amount of water too land in if you didn't make the barrel. Unlike Speedies where you can get a super high tide, yet still get possibly axed on the reef when falling off.
In saying that, there is plenty of options for everyone here. For those who didn't fancy triple overhead grinding G-Land, G-Land Bobby's Surf Camp guests had the option to take our jungle truck down to 20/20's today, where there were some super fun 2-3ft waves that weren't going to annihilate you! Chickens also had a few waves, with one guest, Jason, getting a sick dredging tube down there.
Of course with big swells at G-Land comes consequences. Numerous boards broke today, and one guest from another camp apparently broke his arm! I got some really good barrels today, buzzed me out, but you must pay if you want to dance with the devil... Whilst paddling for a 10ft wave (first wave of the set), my board got caught up in the wind, I ended up air dropping but the bottom of the wave sucked right out. Just about stomped the tail-first air drop, but not quite, and I proceeded to receive the brunt of the lip on the head, and got my best beating of my season so far!! I really did eat shit on that one - a long as hold down and ragdolling plus pinned on the reef even though I was in deep water. Then copped another 6 giant waves on the head. Stoked my board and leggie and body came through unscathed.
The forecast for the next 10 days is looking sooooo good, like it probably won't drop below 5ft the whole time. The Indian Ocean has awoken!!!
