Surfing paradise @ G-Land, Banyuwangi East Java Indonesia

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

One of the best surfing site in the world, you’ll find it at Banyuwangi, East Java Indonesia. It can be reached with an overnight drive from Denpasar, Bali island or 5 hours drive from Surabaya, the second city of Indonesia and the capital of East Java.

My goodness!!!  Almost an exact replay of yesterday went down today.  The main differences were: surf backed off a bit and an elaborate ceremonial sacrifice/offering took place.  But the call regarding the fire blazing anew was the same….equally as shocking the 2nd time coming.  I still didn’t surf! 9 days straight which, of course, is a lot if your here at G-Land.

lionfish

lionfish

Smallest day yet since I arrived 1 month ago.  A few of the guys went for a surf, but I don’t think they were able to ride a wave for more than 20 yards.   G-Land can go flat and tomorrow’s forecast is to go even flatter.  But we still have good winds.  A little south in it again, but dominantly from the east.

Cole went for a dive and speared a small Jack, the 3 Pomes (Saul-Myles-Spencer) and 2 new guests (Greg n Roger) watched a movie and had a surf, Warren went for 2 surfs I think, I saw a lionfish in the little pool off of 1st point, and Molly chased fish all day.  A calm, restful day at Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp.

It’ll be interesting to see how calm the ocean is tomorrow since today is one of the flattest I’ve ever seen.

Over time, everyone develops their own reliable line-up markers at G-Land and I visited two old, almost forgotten friends… gebang kembar.  It’s a such a fun peak that is undoubtedly reliable.  I didn’t surf until 3 today…looked at it a few times earlier on, but took one of those long, unexpected midday sleeps again. And the rest was so well used up by the non-stop wave riding that transpired from my first wave until after sunset.  Thinking back, my first wave was amazingly long.  “That wave went for so long” kept resonating in my thoughts on the 15-minute paddle back up.  WOW!!!

0.0 meter tide at sunrise and with the decrease in swell, I could only see 1 foot of the 2 feet  faces.   With small swell and low low-tides, there is definitely a reason for hope.  When there’s size on a 0.0, noticing how long surfers can disappear from view on their below-sea-level bottom turn is a good indicator of how quick you can get pushed up onto the reef.

By the reach of a 1.0 meter tide, both the offshores and surf started to rise up.  So I planned my surf to ride off the crowning 2.0 meter high and into Happy Hour!  It was few and far in between sets, but same for the number of people out in the surf.

G-Land was about 3 to 5 feet on the face and if you were the chosen one, that rare overhead wave came straight to your smiling face.  Clean and (more…)

Upon the sun’s touch of the horizon line, all the laughter, story-telling, dancing, and play-fighting solidified my belief that everyone main-lined enough Plengkung panacea to leave this place filled with content. And all the first-timers, unknowingly, are hosting a newly sown seed which will later fruit into a delicious “I NEED to go back to G-Land!”

For today’s report, you can read yesterday’s thoughts and simply change NONE to ALMOST NONE…. 10-footers to 12-footers… deep to (more…)

Harry and Jeanette together...forever...again

Harry and Jeanette together...forever...again

It’s nice that I can write the word OFFSHORE and it not reflect my hope for another day.  The “dry-season” trades blew across the Blambangan Peninsula at their common time of 10 o’clock.  G-Land was a fun 4 to 6 foot (faces) with a few, but rare 8 footers.  Most of the action was happening in the lower Kongs/upper Moneys reef sections.  That little extra south in the wind created too much surface chop for upper Kongs and there wasn’t enough energy and direction to get further down reef.

Those days that G-Land is far from hollow…like today… (more…)

Nice pulse arrived today at G-Land with 3 to 4 foot sets focusing a little further up-reef than yesterday…a slight swell-direction shift to the west.  I wasn’t up early early this morning cause I drank 2 small Bintangs.  There’s something sinister inside them beers…maybe they’re still using formaldehyde?  Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp should start pouring Draft Guinness.  Any supporters???

But, by 10 A.M. the offshores had begun their ruckuss with the bamboo and (more…)

And so…. the multi-million dollar modeling prediction was wrong.  Remembering it’s possible would for sure benefit us all… we might stop talking too much and too confidently about what the future is going to be.  Swell was still pushing up onto the reef today with strong force and refined shape.  Money Trees was the focal arena. Come 11 o’clock and here comes the start of an amazing 30 minute pulse.  5 to 7 wave sets… 6 to 8 foot… winds offshore… and not too many riders on the HOLLOW-HOLLOW ones.  The G-Land Surf was quality.  It did back-off by sunset, but not enough to stop the beach-front beer brigade from letting ahhhs out of their dropped jaws.

I’m sitting in Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp dining area and (more…)
