Speedies

G-Land picked up with the tide today. There were 6 ft sets at high tide. Unfortunately it went out with the tide and was lucky to be 3ft by this afternoon. The direction seemed alot better in the morning and swung a little too west by the afternoon also.
Even though G-Land only brang us a short burst of energy it was still great to surf and there were still alot of great waves. Speedies was even on for a little while, small down that end of the reef but still some fun little barrels.

We now have forty five people staying here at Bobby’s in G-Land but the other camps are still pretty empty. Overall the lineup is still pretty mellow and there were plenty of waves for everyone.

G-Land was looking really good this morning. The sets were 8 ft and Launching Pads into Speedies was pumping but the rest of the reef wasn’t that great. After about 1p.m there was a massive sweep coming down the reef and by 3 it was all washed out. It was too low to surf speedies by then and the rest of the reef didn’t look that great.

I paddled up and watched Money trees but there was nobody out the whole of G-Land and it wasn’t looking too great. There were 10ft sets by then and it was that unpredictable I ended up paddling down the boat channel to get in. Caught my frst wave across the boat channel and it was 3ft. Never seen it break there before.

Nobody paddled out G-Land all afternoon it was that out of control.

G-Land dropped off alot today. It was no bigger than 3 ft and very inconsistent. When we went over the footage and photos there was still some great stuff! Alot of the guys were also doing photo shoots and they are still trying to get the chopper sorted.

Rod Brooks gave a dvd presentation tonight on the history of Quiksilver in G-Land. There was alot of older footage and a little bit from yesterday arvo. They are still discussing whether to have the comp back here or not for next year.

Hopefully this swell hits G-Land tomorrow because time is running out and the boys still haven’t surfed speedies.

G-Land was a playground today! Everyone was having fun! The sets were maybe 6ft early but a consistent 4 for most of the day. Money trees, Launching Pads, and Speedies were all really fun.

I snapped my 6’0. It wasn’t quite big enough for the 6’8 and my 6’4 is gone so I was a little under gunned. Got really deep inside the barrel at Speedies and it didn’t let me out. The lip destroyed it so I’ll be needing a new one soon. Wasn’t the only one in G-Land to break one today though.

There is hardly anyone here and everyone has been getting lots of waves here in G-Land.

3rd June 2010

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

G-Land started off to another wet morning after really heavy rain all night. I woke up with a bit of a cold so took it easy all morning and was looking forward to a long afternoon session.

The waves looked really good! The wind was really light and the waves looked so glassy with alot lining up all the way through. There’s hardly anyone here in G-Land with only 25 people here in Bobby’s and only up to 15 people between the others surfing.

Before I finished my lunch we had a guy named Kurt from California break his back at Speedies. When he screamed Linton and Kim from Joyo’s camp came to him and stabilised his back before they got him to the beach. Some guys came into our camp and grabbed me followed by Kimbo, Doctor Blake and some medical gear.

We stabilised him and got him to the Heli pad. It took a few hours but we got the chopper here and it looks like he’ll be o.k! He broke his back without severing his spinal chord and still had full function of everything with sense of feeling everywhere. It was a great team effort and he’s one lucky man we had the equipment and the people we had here at G-Land!

G-Land – 1st June 2010

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

G-Land was consistent and pumping!! Been wanting to write this one for a while now but it finally all came together! The direction was really good for the whole reef. Speedies was REALLY good!

Everybody was happy and nobody got hurt. There were alot of barrels coming through and the offshore tradewinds were perfect!

G-Land broke a few boards today. It was 4 to 6 foot… Maybe even bigger. From the shore you couldn’t see people bottom hand turning on the sets because they were behind the wave infront.

There is now a tower on the reef made out of bamboo for the quiksilver event here in G-Land. Should be a great place for them to film from!

Woody ran out of beer last night. Everybody was very thirsty and drank the bar dry. Trust the swell to jump after a big night eh! Everybody is very tired and we will all be in bed soon. What a day!

G-Land – May 30th 2010

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

G-Land was another inconsistent day. Speedies was breaking and there were good waves to be had up and down the reef. The swell dropped a bit through the day and was lucky to be 3 foot by sunset. The trade winds picked up again so hopefully that’s the start of the season pattern. Managed to dry a few things out.

Creased my board today on the first wave but you get that here in G-Land..

Lot’s of work is getting done here at Bobby’s. We now have wifi down the beach and all our computers have been reprogrammed and some replaced with new ones. There is a tower being built for Quiksilver to film from. Hopefully G-Land picks up tomorrow with a new pulse in the swell that is predicted

May 21st 2010

G-Land was very inconsistent today, paddled out Kongs for a while and got some really fun ones. A guy I was surfing with seen a small white tip shark and I seen a small tiger shark so we were staying close together. There was alot of fish out there and birds feeding so we figured there was plenty of food for them and didn’t let it bother us too much.
The waves at money trees and speedies were the best and although inconsistent the waves were of good quality when they came with sets at a little overhead. Small and fun! Onshore came around lunch with a rain cloud that was just off the reef but was light and only lasted an hour. Other than that the winds were offshore and light for the majority of the day.
Big change over tomorrow and the boys are up for a drink tonight. It’s been pretty mellow all week so I may just join them. Kimbo and his group of lifeguards are coming so it will be good to see some familiar faces.

May 20th 2010

G-Land was pulsing early on the sets this morning. The wind wasn’t right til 10:00am but earlier there were sets easy double overhead and the direction seemed really good because even with the onshore the wave looked makeable all the way through. It looked bigger than yesterday and a few of the guests that surfed yesterday even headed down to tiger tracks and 20 20′s to get away from the bigger ones.
I waited til lunch and went out for the long arvo session. Sat at Speedies waiting for ”the one”  but after 2 and a half hous got 6 waves, however, 2 of them were pretty damn good! Looking up the reef to money trees was more consistent and I seen some great waves ridden all the way through. When it got to shallow I paddled up and got some really nice clean, hollow waves.

It definitely dropped after lunch. The sets were really good and the later in the day just got hollower. It was very inconsistent but if you were prepared to wait there were some perfect waves coming through.
The swell is on the decline until Saturday but it shouldn’t be dropping a great deal.. The long range forecast looks really good too =)

G-Land picked up today! It didn’t look any bigger than yesterday until around 12 when some nice sets started appearing. 6-10ft faces on the sets with plenty of push but still inconsistent. There weren’t many people out though and plenty of good quality waves were enjoyed by all. Everyone has had a smile on their face and alot of them have gone to bed, it’s only 7:30.
There were some waves that were a bit too quick but alot were lining up really good with a bit more south in the swell and it wasn’t rare to get a wave from the start of Money trees all the way down to Speedies.. That speaks for itself really… Put in a 7 hour session so I’m a little tired.. No complaints except for that my wax was stolen by the monkeys. I hope they didn’t eat it..
