rain

G-Land rained from the heavens this morning! After a reported month or so of only occasional light rain, it just bucketed down for a few hours today. Highly unusual for G-Land in July. So with the rain came variable winds that lasted all day. On the positive side the swell built all day. Beginning around 2-3ft in the morning, it was solid thick 4-5ft in the afternoon and grinding down the low tide Money Trees sections. However with that variable wind it made any barrel riding attempts dangerous and risky.

Not a lot of guests came in with good reports. Although there were still some stoked punters who got some great rides. I took a handful of guests down to Tigertracks late morning. 3 girls and a guy + me, we all had a fun time and got some nice 2-3ft hot dog rights. Perfect waves for the girls to feel at ease on, and still some great pockets for me Asher & I to whip some backhand combos.

Tomorrow should be real good presuming the trade winds blow…

G-Land wasn’t on like Donkey Kong but was still fun. The swell was a solid 4ft so it dropped alot since yesterday. There was a bit of rain around today so the winds didn’t get quite right, however Money Trees was very glassy. Kongs was good fun on low tide and was getting most of the swell.

The monkeys were going off in G-Land today, they were jumping all over the place and playing games. You forget you’re in the jungle here sometimes but there’s always something to remind you where you are.

The swell forecast for G-Land over the next few days doesn’t look so good so hopefully it’s not right.

G-Land was really fun today. Consistent walls of about 6ft were pumping through all day. Everyone was getting barrelled and the crowd wasn’t too bad.

The direction wasn’t the best for all of  G-Land but money trees was very consistent. The wind was howling offshore and holding up the wave nice. What a machine =)

It rained again this morning in G-Land for a few hours but then the sun came out and it was game on! Good day had by all!

3rd June 2010

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

G-Land started off to another wet morning after really heavy rain all night. I woke up with a bit of a cold so took it easy all morning and was looking forward to a long afternoon session.

The waves looked really good! The wind was really light and the waves looked so glassy with alot lining up all the way through. There’s hardly anyone here in G-Land with only 25 people here in Bobby’s and only up to 15 people between the others surfing.

Before I finished my lunch we had a guy named Kurt from California break his back at Speedies. When he screamed Linton and Kim from Joyo’s camp came to him and stabilised his back before they got him to the beach. Some guys came into our camp and grabbed me followed by Kimbo, Doctor Blake and some medical gear.

We stabilised him and got him to the Heli pad. It took a few hours but we got the chopper here and it looks like he’ll be o.k! He broke his back without severing his spinal chord and still had full function of everything with sense of feeling everywhere. It was a great team effort and he’s one lucky man we had the equipment and the people we had here at G-Land!

G-Land – May 26th 2010

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

G-Land had a little bit more wind before lunch time and it was showing good form. There were some really nice waves. It stopped at low tide which was at 2 and then with the tide came a bit of a pulse.

The wind backed off and it was super glassy. The direction was a little more south and it was lining up really good! There were a few barrels and nice long walls. Between all the camps the crowd can be a bit much when everybody’s out but everyone got a few.
We had a little rain in the morning and it was raining just before dinner. There is a big thick black cloud over to the north west so I’m really hoping it doesn’t rain again. My phone wouldn’t work when I tried to use it yesterday from all the moisture in my room.
The Aussies in the camp were glued to the t.v screen this afternoon for the state of origin footy. Queensland won over N.S.W so there are alot of drunk and disappointed men in the bar area..

March 22nd 2010

G-Land didn’t give me too much to write about today. We had a big changeover with 35 people in the camp  now. The waves were very glassy and about 3 ft on the sets. Again it was very inconsistent.
There is a bit of cloud around and we had a light sprinkle of rain.
The boys kept puting beers infront of me last night and today I have been a bit dusty and lacking energy. I’m having trouble remembering everyone’s name.. Haha.. The swell is meant to start pulsing in tomorrow so tomorrow might be a bit more exciting.

May 21st 2010

G-Land was very inconsistent today, paddled out Kongs for a while and got some really fun ones. A guy I was surfing with seen a small white tip shark and I seen a small tiger shark so we were staying close together. There was alot of fish out there and birds feeding so we figured there was plenty of food for them and didn’t let it bother us too much.
The waves at money trees and speedies were the best and although inconsistent the waves were of good quality when they came with sets at a little overhead. Small and fun! Onshore came around lunch with a rain cloud that was just off the reef but was light and only lasted an hour. Other than that the winds were offshore and light for the majority of the day.
Big change over tomorrow and the boys are up for a drink tonight. It’s been pretty mellow all week so I may just join them. Kimbo and his group of lifeguards are coming so it will be good to see some familiar faces.

G-Land on May 6th 2010

Friday, May 7th, 2010

G-Land STILL continuing to provide us all with really good-fun waves.  Surf was about 6-8 foot faces, but ever so patiently, the point would line up with a 10 foot set.  Fairly inconsistent through the day, but several pulses made the wait worthwhile.

Interesting cause Money Trees was not really recieving too much of the swell.  But Launching Pad and Speedies worked most of the day…even on the lowish tide.  Some beautiful pipes coming through Speed Reef.

Tough to make a fully committed claim on the season shifting since the rain is still coming down on and off, but the winds have been real nice since the 1st of the month.

Pool comp tonight and it’s always a great time.  The staff love it and the guests really enjoy themselves too.  It’s nice to get everyone together and create a solid memory of the communal feeling we can get being here together!

G-Land on April 20th 2010

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

G-Land…again…got drenched by the clouds.  The early morning was fairly calm, just a light onshore, but another rain squall came through at about 10:00 and gave us a thorough soaking.  Surf was OK.  The rain kept the wind speed down and so the wave face’s stayed clean enough to let a few guys get some decent length rides.  Only a few were lining up.

Surf was about 6-8 foot faces focusing on Fan Palm and Ledge/Money’s.  Not much else happening anywhere else on the reef.  222 degrees!   The surf stayed consistent through the day, but the session during the rain squall was the best.  Sitting out in the water and looking back at the land is beautiful right now.  All the rain can be challenging to endure, but the jungle is amazingly green!

First suture job today.  Puma threaded 6 stitches into the palm of an unfortunate guest.  Being maybe a little to excited to go spearfishing, Jeremy leveled himself when he stepped off the beach and onto the reef.  That fringe area is so slick, in fact many places on the reef are really slick right now.  There’s always something to be aware of here at G-Land

G-Land on April 5th 2010

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

G-Land kept alive through the night and gave us another fun day of surf.  The winds were much better, lightly blowing out of the south for several hours then simmered down by about 14:00, letting the surface clean up for a beautiful sunset session.  The surf height was about 6-8 foot faces and waves breaking throughout the whole reef.  Speedies had a few waves worth waiting for,  Kongs was said to have some quality fun waves all day, and Ledge/Money’s was really enjoyable right up to sunset.  Another fun surfing wave at G-Land.

The rain is still on and off, meaning the season has not truly shifted yet.  The local rice fields have yet to be harvested, which, to me is a good indicator of that.  I would think that once the water temp starts to drop a bit, that will be another good sign.  But, right now it’s perfect…at least for me.  It’s in that range where you can’t really feel its temp, only the pressure of it against your body.  But I got to make sure I’m drinking plenty of water during the middle of the day cause, with the sun’s intensity and warm water, getting sucked dry happens quickly.

There has been a beautiful garuda laut (sea eagle) drifting about over the lagoon the past couple of days.   I haven’t seen a high speed dive yet, but if I’m fortunate enough to be there when it happens, I’m sure it will leave some sort of impression.
