G-LAND WAS ON!!!
Swell still coming through with real power and after yesterdays sudden arrival, it had enough time to clean up better and line up from Launching Pad into Speedies. High tide at 10:00 with plenty of water and much better wind conditions.
Early morning was calm wind and glassy. Some really beautiful waves coming through. A North wind came up and blew for about an hour-n’a-half and then the offshore slowly gained its strength from about 11:00 onward, grooming up the surface real nice. The swell had some true power today, more refined compared with yesterday, and thundered down Speedies on the larger waves. BIG TUBES.
As the tide dropped below safe Speedies level, Money Trees was setting up real nice for the rest of the day. Big walls holding up well and running down the reef for hundreds of yards. Low tide Money’s had double-ups and some stayed hollow and powerful.
ahhh…yes. surf was 14-18 foot faces at Launching Pads and Money Trees. Speedies maxed out at about 12 foot on the face. 8-10 foot Hawaiian scale.
i’m beat…thoroughly spent…and looking forward to sleeping.

G-Land received the first sizable swell today. It was the first day that I could hear the waves thundering while I was still in my bungalow. The lay of the day went like this…. 2.6 meter high at 10:00 dropping to a 0.1 m low at 17:00; swell coming from about 204 degrees; consistent sets up to
12 foot on the face, peeling down the reef; really calm winds; good group of people in the water; intense sun and really warm water.
Speedies was on! G-Land was on… Even though the offshore wasn’t blowing, there was plenty of power in the swell to keep the lip line from breaking apart too much. I wish I could describe the situation vivid enough to paint a realistic picture. I’ve never seen Speedies like I did at certain times of today’s session. Amazingly glassy, drawing so much water off the reef that the drops were really difficult to make, all the new coral colors grabbing my attention, and bends and warbles in some of the waves that it was horseshoeing more than I’ve ever seen it. Plenty barrels ridden by everyone out there.
Swell forecast for tomorrow looks nice. I really hope that we continue receiving better and better conditions…well NATURALLY. But the way it’s been switching back and forth, I get the subtle feeling that it’s generally making a slow switch to dry-season conditions.

G-Land recieved a very nice swell bump today. Definitely the best day since my arrival a couple of weeks ago and the wind stayed pretty calm almost all day minus a two hour blast from 2:00 until 4:00. It was about as good as it can be without the offshore. Easy 10 foot faces on the sets and with more power than the other days. The forecast for tomorrow is showing the same!!!
Two sessions today and I’m pretty thoroughly spent. Started out at the Fang and ended up getting a few nice waves through Speedies. There would have been some amazing barrels with the angin darat (land wind=offshore) but it was still really enjoyable to ride some waves in the faster flowing water.
The second session in the later afternoon was at Money Trees and I’m still feeling amazed that I got to surf it alone for the last hour and half. Newcastle Neil was solo up at the Ledge and giving me an enjoyable show to watch in between the Money’s sets. We both sat through the bad winds and it was absolutely worth it. The others surfers…and that’s not many…didn’t wait it out. But hopefully they can get some redemption tomorrow.
A beautiful day here at G-Land.

The fun, 3-day run came to an end….although….guys were still going surfing. G-Land almost always has something to ride, especially considering where most of us come from. Maybe if you were from another equatorial country would you not surf on these days. But, for Indonesia’s standards, it was small…and when it’s small here, there’s only one place to go. Guys were saying that Kongs was fun, still with some head-high waves but a little weak. I would easily take the bet that surfing alone up there compensated for the lack of power and/or size.

Over time, everyone develops their own reliable line-up markers at G-Land and I visited two old, almost forgotten friends… gebang kembar. It’s a such a fun peak that is undoubtedly reliable. I didn’t surf until 3 today…looked at it a few times earlier on, but took one of those long, unexpected midday sleeps again. And the rest was so well used up by the non-stop wave riding that transpired from my first wave until after sunset. Thinking back, my first wave was amazingly long. “That wave went for so long” kept resonating in my thoughts on the 15-minute paddle back up. WOW!!!

Walking through the corridor between the dining area and the beach was emotional early this morning. The thunder generated by the reef bounce was powerful. I was instantly shocked out of my normal morning old-man pace and into another cellular orbit. It was a nice reminder to harness that power more voluntarily.
BUT…there was a different reason why (more…)

G-Land had some real nice Money Trees action today. Many guests came in happy after having fairly uncrowded 3-5ft offshore waves coming through most of the day. The camps are all the quietest they have been for May, so those of us who are here are enjoying the empty lineups! (more…)
