Money Trees

G-Land went a bit schizophrenic today…or maybe I just went schizo from it.  Swell was pretty small and conditions not so good in the early morning. Surf was small, bumpy and the swell lines were broken up.  But by 11:00, really nice sets were breaking through Money Trees, setting up some long, hollow sections.  Waves were about 6-8 foot faces and wind stayed real calm.  Seemed like early signs of this supposed big swell were possibly showing their presence.

Come about 2:00 and the surf backed right off.  Maybe just because of the low tide.  Maybe cause of some other reason.  But a light offshore started up at the same time and it seemed like a surf after the 3 o’clock turn of the tide would be worth it….considering what was happening just a couple of hours ago.

Paddled out into the most inconsistent surf, laden with massive clumps of jellyfish congregating from Fan Palms right up through Kongs.  Hard trade off since the surf was best up there and Money Trees really only had just a few waves.  Jellyfish or really long waits???

But to keep things positive, I did see two handfuls of really nice waves come through Kongs and Fan Palms.  Even a few high-line barrels that let the guys back out onto the face.

G-Land … a day loaded up with good fun from good people.  I had to wait until the  9th to write the 8th’s report cause last night was a good one.  Really great group of people here and everyone kept alive until late into the night.  It started out with Oahu’s Johnny Ginella’s 18th birthday and continued on with some freshness.  All the newly skinned drums (4 of them), a guitar and didgeridoo, vocals , and freedmen came together for an all night jam session.  Simply put…GOOD FUN!

Swell came up just a bit, sending us some 8 foot-face sets, but extremely long waits in between.  Nice form up at Kongs and definitely the most consistent.  Fan Palms was working well, but as you moved further down the reef, the lulls got longer.  If  you sat at Money Trees and got lucky, a nice hollow one would set up.  But really long waits.

Wind went a bit variable today.  Started out calm, then came up from the North, shifting out of the West, then backed right off until about noon.  And finally a light East wind came alive.  For the most part since I’ve been here, the winds have been good.  Hoping for some great wind if this swell comes in the next few days.

G-Land backed off from yesterday and definitely was a day to do something other than surfing.  But still, there’s always a few people that want to surf no matter what.  I tried to rally together a group to go to the caves beside Pancur (closest Ranger gate to us) but it fell through in the end.  We got 5 newly skinned drums here and it would have been nice to go act a bit tribal up there.  Maybe another day.

Kongs was maybe head high maximum and pretty weak looking.  I didn’t see anything come through Money Trees today.  Winds were fairly calm throughout the day and because of that, by 3:00 o’clock, the smooth ocean surface made the afternoon glare ridiculously overwhelming and blinding like a welding arc.

Story talking is starting.  Anyone looking at the swell forecast has seen what I’m writing about.  If the numbers really do materialize, it’s going to be interesting to see how big some of the peaks coming in will be.  Definitely the most sizable swell of the season.  Maybe I’ll be writing the same thing again on the 11th.

G-Land…YES….G-Land!!!  It’s such a nice feeling to come back here and I’m sure it’s a feeling every one of you that’s been here at least twice understands.  Everything is fresh in this corner of  East Java, especially the air. The jungle is full and lush with all the unexpected rain through June and it’s great to see it like it is.  Hopefully though, it’s not going to get any greener.

The surf was fun today once again.  Kongs was the most consistent with sets getting up to 6-8 foot on the face.  The morning up until about 2:00 stayed clean with still winds growing to just a light offshore, but then went South and sent a little side-bump down the point.   Money Trees was inconsistent.  Size was about the same, but you had to be looking for a test of patience if you wanted to sit there.  But it stayed clean all day…out of south-wind bump that hit Kongs later on.

As I was coming in through the Ledge at sunset, I watched two back-to-back sets come through Fan Palms.  Really nice looking waves.  About 8 foot on the face, steep-walled, long, clean, and a surprise to everyone left in the water.  So they went unridden.

Two young South African girls are here for their first time.  Yesterday, on their first day …they decided to go down to Tigertracks for a late afternoon surf…at lower tide.  I thought it would be junk but supposedly they had a few fun waves.  So I thought they were lucky.  Then I found out they saw a Macan Hitam (Black Panther) on their way back.  Now I know their LUCKY!!!  I’ve been hoping to see one for awhile.   I didn’t believe them cause…well…their new.  But Hari and Jackie were their escorts and they vouch for it too.

G-Land still produced some really good quality waves again today. Wasn’t expecting much so it was a nice surprise. The direction was really good for Kongs, Money Trees was a little fast and sectiony but if you got the right one it was glassy walls of magic, solid 4ft later in the day.
There was a good little pulse so I’m hoping G-Land will produce some more walls of quality. The crowd here is very minimal and we’re all having a great time.
The other camps in G-Land are very empty. Kimbo has even cancelled his yoga session tomorrow morning at Joyo’s because there’ll be nobody there. Spewin =)

G-Land wasn’t on like Donkey Kong but was still fun. The swell was a solid 4ft so it dropped alot since yesterday. There was a bit of rain around today so the winds didn’t get quite right, however Money Trees was very glassy. Kongs was good fun on low tide and was getting most of the swell.

The monkeys were going off in G-Land today, they were jumping all over the place and playing games. You forget you’re in the jungle here sometimes but there’s always something to remind you where you are.

The swell forecast for G-Land over the next few days doesn’t look so good so hopefully it’s not right.

G-Land was looking really good this morning. The sets were 8 ft and Launching Pads into Speedies was pumping but the rest of the reef wasn’t that great. After about 1p.m there was a massive sweep coming down the reef and by 3 it was all washed out. It was too low to surf speedies by then and the rest of the reef didn’t look that great.

I paddled up and watched Money trees but there was nobody out the whole of G-Land and it wasn’t looking too great. There were 10ft sets by then and it was that unpredictable I ended up paddling down the boat channel to get in. Caught my frst wave across the boat channel and it was 3ft. Never seen it break there before.

Nobody paddled out G-Land all afternoon it was that out of control.

G-Land was really fun today. Consistent walls of about 6ft were pumping through all day. Everyone was getting barrelled and the crowd wasn’t too bad.

The direction wasn’t the best for all of  G-Land but money trees was very consistent. The wind was howling offshore and holding up the wave nice. What a machine =)

It rained again this morning in G-Land for a few hours but then the sun came out and it was game on! Good day had by all!

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

G-Land was a playground today! Everyone was having fun! The sets were maybe 6ft early but a consistent 4 for most of the day. Money trees, Launching Pads, and Speedies were all really fun.

I snapped my 6’0. It wasn’t quite big enough for the 6’8 and my 6’4 is gone so I was a little under gunned. Got really deep inside the barrel at Speedies and it didn’t let me out. The lip destroyed it so I’ll be needing a new one soon. Wasn’t the only one in G-Land to break one today though.

There is hardly anyone here and everyone has been getting lots of waves here in G-Land.

G-Land – 24th of May 2010

Monday, May 24th, 2010

G-Land started off very wet today. I got stuck at the bar last night. It was raining so heavy we couldn’t run back to the rooms so we just had a few drinks and waited. After a few too many I decided to just do the run and get wet. I was soaked!

When I checked the surf in the morning there was a massive hole in the beach front. The path to Bobby’s flowed down like a river and eroded about 10metres square of dirt into the ocean. It was over waist height deep and the tables and chairs were in the bottom of the hole like they had just sank into the ground.
The wind stayed light and softly offshore. The swell finally pumped in and the biggest set was probably 8ft. There were some bombs ridden and boards broken. Alot of excitement  between the surfers and alot of hoots as people were dropping over the ledge. Money trees and Kongs were the pick however Kongs was just a little fat.. The swell is a little more west than it has been but still good to see a little size. Looking forward to the session tomorrow!
