Money Trees

I woke up with the strong hope that today would be the day I surfed again.  Early morning conditions were promising, just needed the offshores to start up.  Fan Palms was about 4 to 6 foot (faces) and rare sets were making it down into Moneys.  I continued to feel positive that today I would remember what riding a surfboard was like…haven’t stood on one since November the 8th.

3rd consecutive day of quality G-Land Surf.  Backed-off just a bit from yesterday, but “only a bit.”  Every day that passes makes me more appreciative for the conditions that we’re getting.  There will be that day…probably soon…where I’ll commit to the thought “yeah, the season has switched.”  It’s getting hotter, more humid, a few light rains at night, more atmospheric moisture hanging above Grajagan Bay, the monsoon season started off the Philippines, BUT… the offshores are still happening.  And that needs to change so I can easily “commit to that thought!”

IT WAS A DAY NOT TO MISS if you were here at G-Land.  Fortunately, all the guests got to surf. I didn’t once again.  But… fortunate for me, I’m not bummed by it either… just truly stoked for the guests.  They got that gem of a day…November 12th 2009 will be remembered by several.

I’ll have to trust the others about (more…)

These early morning low-tides have really set up the later part of the day to only get better.   A little more swell energy showed up today at G-Land…contra to what the forecast had predicted.  And this is always a good reminder not to get overly reliant on the swell models.  Money Trees was breaking more down-the-line than yesterday morning, but Kongs is and has been the staple on these retracting swell conditions.  Still, it was a nice size…about 5 to 8 foot on the face at midday and still offshore all day!

By the late afternoon, Moneys rarely had sets, but no one sitting down there either.  I was watching it from Kongs, hoping to get lured down there and enjoy it alone.  Kongs was quality fun, but it wasn’t that consistent (more…)

Upon the sun’s touch of the horizon line, all the laughter, story-telling, dancing, and play-fighting solidified my belief that everyone main-lined enough Plengkung panacea to leave this place filled with content. And all the first-timers, unknowingly, are hosting a newly sown seed which will later fruit into a delicious “I NEED to go back to G-Land!”

For today’s report, you can read yesterday’s thoughts and simply change NONE to ALMOST NONE…. 10-footers to 12-footers… deep to (more…)

Nice pulse arrived today at G-Land with 3 to 4 foot sets focusing a little further up-reef than yesterday…a slight swell-direction shift to the west.  I wasn’t up early early this morning cause I drank 2 small Bintangs.  There’s something sinister inside them beers…maybe they’re still using formaldehyde?  Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp should start pouring Draft Guinness.  Any supporters???

But, by 10 A.M. the offshores had begun their ruckuss with the bamboo and (more…)

It really amazes me how different the G-Land Surf conditions are from one day to the next.  The early morning’s situation was not even close enough to wipe the sleep out of my eyes or head.  However, by 11:00, sets were showing up as the tide came through its bottom…..but it was innnn_connnn_sissss_tent!

I ended up timing my surf opposite from (more…)

Not too much to write about today BECAUSE it was a day to do mainly one thing here at G-Land…. RIDE a SURFBOARD on WAVES.  I can throw in a few other activities such as;  ate quality food, fixed a few dings, stretched, but I don’t want to yank details out of them.

Surfed some quality 6 to 8 foot-faced Fang.  I saw some nice barrels from both perspectives and they were equally enjoyable.  My goodness there (more…)

Walking through the corridor between the dining area and the beach was emotional early this morning.  The thunder generated by the reef bounce was powerful.  I was instantly shocked out of my normal morning old-man pace and into another cellular orbit.  It was a nice reminder to harness that power more voluntarily.

BUT…there was a different reason why (more…)

I’m from southern California and I may be setting myself up to have fewer and fewer surfs there in the future.  Today, I would give G-Land a 4 out of 10.  Naturally….there’ll be a difference between my 10 and yours.  But one thing is for sure, I’ve been fortunate enough to see high quality waves on almost every section of the reef minus beyond Speedies. Not many people have seen that section either….  My point is that today’s 4 here was a 9 out of 10 back home.  If I can’t permanently live here at Bobby’s G-Land Surf Camp, I may have to start searching for a quality tree somewhere near!!!

So…I made it into the line-up at about 10:45, but beautifully there was no one to line-up behind.  By 11:30 my head was truly burning up cause I had not stopped surfing/paddling/surfing/etc..  Three souls joined me after my first couple of waves and we traded off waves with a smile.  I write souls cause it’s much easier to feel that…see that…when your not in the middle of a hungry pack of individuals.

Photog John came up to us, stopped for a brief moment before continuing on up-reef to the more populus pack.  Not many more though.  Ended up getting that special window.  If he parked below us, everyone from Money Trees would have migrated down.

Today’s G-Land Surf Report:  3-4 foot (6-8 foot faces)…12 seconds @ 207*…~10 knot offshore….AND every section of the reef having a moment today with exception to Launching Pads and beyond top-end Speedies. That easily  misjudgable ledge even had a couple of…well…ledges!
