My goodness!!! Almost an exact replay of yesterday went down today. The main differences were: surf backed off a bit and an elaborate ceremonial sacrifice/offering took place. But the call regarding the fire blazing anew was the same….equally as shocking the 2nd time coming. I still didn’t surf! 9 days straight which, of course, is a lot if your here at G-Land.

Monday, November 16th, 2009Sorry….forgot to write one up yesterday and by this point in time, I’ve forgotten pretty much what went down. I do remember that the surf was not too good and some of the guys surfed Kongs. Some, by the way, means not all 6 guests surfed.
ENJOY….

Saturday, November 14th, 2009The fun, 3-day run came to an end….although….guys were still going surfing. G-Land almost always has something to ride, especially considering where most of us come from. Maybe if you were from another equatorial country would you not surf on these days. But, for Indonesia’s standards, it was small…and when it’s small here, there’s only one place to go. Guys were saying that Kongs was fun, still with some head-high waves but a little weak. I would easily take the bet that surfing alone up there compensated for the lack of power and/or size.

Saturday, November 14th, 20093rd consecutive day of quality G-Land Surf. Backed-off just a bit from yesterday, but “only a bit.” Every day that passes makes me more appreciative for the conditions that we’re getting. There will be that day…probably soon…where I’ll commit to the thought “yeah, the season has switched.” It’s getting hotter, more humid, a few light rains at night, more atmospheric moisture hanging above Grajagan Bay, the monsoon season started off the Philippines, BUT… the offshores are still happening. And that needs to change so I can easily “commit to that thought!”

Thursday, November 12th, 2009IT WAS A DAY NOT TO MISS if you were here at G-Land. Fortunately, all the guests got to surf. I didn’t once again. But… fortunate for me, I’m not bummed by it either… just truly stoked for the guests. They got that gem of a day…November 12th 2009 will be remembered by several.
I’ll have to trust the others about (more…)

Monday, November 9th, 2009It was a slow, relaxing day today. Seems odd, but giving it a good thought, G-Land can be so far from a slow and relaxing experience. Maximum set size…trying to stay positive….was head-high. But it was a test of patience to wait for those rare ones. One more day of offshores, but the south element has been getting a little more dominant the past 2 days.
All the serfs surfed king Kongs. I buzzed down to the end of the rainbow, dug my hand into the Money pot, but got conned by the little green-draped man a handful of times. Decided to shift my approach to the backdoor for one last push of luck. Sneaked in over the ledge and snuck out through a hole in the wall and then took the slow low tide walk back home with that beautiful golden coin stashed deep in my back pocket.

Saturday, November 7th, 2009These early morning low-tides have really set up the later part of the day to only get better. A little more swell energy showed up today at G-Land…contra to what the forecast had predicted. And this is always a good reminder not to get overly reliant on the swell models. Money Trees was breaking more down-the-line than yesterday morning, but Kongs is and has been the staple on these retracting swell conditions. Still, it was a nice size…about 5 to 8 foot on the face at midday and still offshore all day!
By the late afternoon, Moneys rarely had sets, but no one sitting down there either. I was watching it from Kongs, hoping to get lured down there and enjoy it alone. Kongs was quality fun, but it wasn’t that consistent (more…)

Saturday, November 7th, 2009Over time, everyone develops their own reliable line-up markers at G-Land and I visited two old, almost forgotten friends… gebang kembar. It’s a such a fun peak that is undoubtedly reliable. I didn’t surf until 3 today…looked at it a few times earlier on, but took one of those long, unexpected midday sleeps again. And the rest was so well used up by the non-stop wave riding that transpired from my first wave until after sunset. Thinking back, my first wave was amazingly long. “That wave went for so long” kept resonating in my thoughts on the 15-minute paddle back up. WOW!!!

Friday, November 6th, 20090.0 meter tide at sunrise and with the decrease in swell, I could only see 1 foot of the 2 feet faces. With small swell and low low-tides, there is definitely a reason for hope. When there’s size on a 0.0, noticing how long surfers can disappear from view on their below-sea-level bottom turn is a good indicator of how quick you can get pushed up onto the reef.
By the reach of a 1.0 meter tide, both the offshores and surf started to rise up. So I planned my surf to ride off the crowning 2.0 meter high and into Happy Hour! It was few and far in between sets, but same for the number of people out in the surf.
G-Land was about 3 to 5 feet on the face and if you were the chosen one, that rare overhead wave came straight to your smiling face. Clean and (more…)
