Happy Independence Day! Today marks 65 years of Independence in Indonesia, so celebrations are in place.

G-Land started off small today, 2-3ft up till about lunch time, then after lunch it started picking up into the 3-4ft range, and then I seen a solid 5-6ft set rattling down the Money Tree reef before dark. So a good sign for tomorrow! The wind was a light offshore breeze, but didn’t come up till near lunch time. Actually I did see a few people get shacked through the afternoon. So it was quite nice out there.

Back to the celebrations, there was a near 8meter oil covered pole in the ground down at the beach, and around the top of it was a bunch of prizes. No guests joined in this time, perhaps because of the extreme height, or half of them were out surfing for the high tide. Plenty of staff members got covered in grease and at the start it was teams of 3. It was soon apparent that 3 people climbing up on top of each other was not getting anywhere near the top. So the rules changed to 4 people. Still nobody could quite reach. So 5 people, one of top of the other!! Then prizes began to be won.

A pity no guests made a team because there was prizes like 1 week in Superior and such up for grabs. The locals traded all the prizes for a whole lotta Bintang. More…

G-Land produced some quality waves today… Sure I’ve seen it better, but with 4-5ft waves rifling down the Money Tree reef and just enough trade wind to keep it clean, there was definitely some good waves. I talked myself out of going out right until dead low tide, and ended up getting lucky on the Ledge with my first G-Land shack session of the season. Captured them all on a GoPro camera mounted on my surfboard, so by the end of the season I should have a nice lil video to post up on our website documenting the G-Land tube!

Hawaiian lad Asher got a screaming good tube on the morning session, while his girlfriend had a fun session at Tigertracks along with the Kiwi girls and a few Aussie chaps. The water temp was quite nice all round, I got to hot in my spring suit this afternoon, so that was a pleasant surprise. Although I have no qualms about wearing wetsuit in warm water here, as when the s#*t hits the fan and I end up on the reef, its great to have that wetsuit for some body armour.

Tonight is Gandrung full moon dance party. It was supposed to be on the beach but there was a light shower upon dusk, so its been moved into the restaurant just to be safe. Should be some good dancing going on tonight, as my fellow Kiwi crew are on the vodka’s and no doubt they’ll be priming me up on the Russian drink to get me to reveal my trademark Gandrung dance moves.

Welcome back to G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp Mr George, aka Mr Coca Cola, perhaps the guy who has spent the most amount of days in G-Land than anybody else?! A legend in his own right, he knows the G-Land Surf like the back of his hand, he’s in his 50′s and he’s fit as a fiddle, rides a variety of surfboards and surfs 2-3 times a day, and outpaddles everybody!

G-Land was about 3-4ft in the morning with (more…)

I farewelled Bali early in the morning, and the sunrise came up over Bali behind me as the G-Land Express fast boat shot off towards Java. Kuta Reef wasn’t even breaking as we left, yet between Bali and Java it was reasonably rough with the August tradewinds creating windswells to contend with.

Coming around the G-Land headland 2 hours later, I see that the G-Land Surf is only 2-3ft, and it remained this way for the rest of the day. Waves were mostly at Kongs and Fan Palms. Clean offshores on it all day made for fun waves especially for those who are on their first ever G-Land trip.

Looks like tomorrow should be solid, so stay tuned for how it all goes, whether or not Speedies lights up! Tonight we have a Gandrung dance party to partly celebrate the New Moon and also to tie in with the end of Independence Day week.

G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp surf report is a bit late for this day, due to me planning on making it after the full moon dance party. But after a few too many Bintangs and a lot of dancing, the last thing I could do was type a report, the only thing I could think of was to crash! The Full Moon dance party was super fun, the name is Gandrung. The Gandrung consists of a band playing some interesting looking instruments, and 3 beautiful female traditional dancers. And all the guests get to take turns dancing the magical Banyuwangi dance with them.

G-Land may have been tame yesterday, but today it was even tamer! The odd nice looking 2ft set would come through, but it wasn’t spinning my wheels. Most G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp guests didn’t surf today, choosing to save energy for the solid swell forecast to hit tomorrow.

A very slow day in G-Land today with a strong offshore making the rides seem even slower! Well OK it was still a solid 3ft on the big sets, warm water and nice weather, so many guests were still happy just to get amongst it. Although Hawaiian boy Christian got a nasty low tide back scratch and (more…)

G-Land had some nice sets in the 3-4ft range. I even seen one freak set come through in the mid morning that reared its head on the bombie before bombing into money trees at a solid 6ft!! (more…)
