full moon

G-Land produced some quality waves today… Sure I’ve seen it better, but with 4-5ft waves rifling down the Money Tree reef and just enough trade wind to keep it clean, there was definitely some good waves. I talked myself out of going out right until dead low tide, and ended up getting lucky on the Ledge with my first G-Land shack session of the season. Captured them all on a GoPro camera mounted on my surfboard, so by the end of the season I should have a nice lil video to post up on our website documenting the G-Land tube!

Hawaiian lad Asher got a screaming good tube on the morning session, while his girlfriend had a fun session at Tigertracks along with the Kiwi girls and a few Aussie chaps. The water temp was quite nice all round, I got to hot in my spring suit this afternoon, so that was a pleasant surprise. Although I have no qualms about wearing wetsuit in warm water here, as when the s#*t hits the fan and I end up on the reef, its great to have that wetsuit for some body armour.

Tonight is Gandrung full moon dance party. It was supposed to be on the beach but there was a light shower upon dusk, so its been moved into the restaurant just to be safe. Should be some good dancing going on tonight, as my fellow Kiwi crew are on the vodka’s and no doubt they’ll be priming me up on the Russian drink to get me to reveal my trademark Gandrung dance moves.

G-Land on April 3rd 2010

G-Land…well the surf was almost completely non-existent in the A.M..  A handful of us went out at Kongs, and I can definitively write that today was the softest I’ve ever seen waves breaking on the reef.  In fact, I had more fun belly boarding the inside reforms with a few staff learning to surf rather than riding the bumped up waves on the outside.  There’s always a day that pushes the boundaries of each individuals G-Land wave quality scale.  Usually I’m hoping for a new 10 instead of a new 1, but….well, now I have a new 1 for G-Land!

It’s good to get the blood flowing rather than mushing all day so I set up the volleyball net in the newly groomed rivermouth embankment.  This past full moon tide was so high that it cleaned out a massive amount of drift debris… so it was the perfect time to set it up.

During the sunset game, I noticed a few small sets (3 foot faces) push through
Money Trees.  And the forecast is for a small, new swell to arrive tomorrow so I truly hope that what I was seeing was a precursor for tomorrow.  Even more promising was that tonight was the first night in quite awhile that it glassed-off.  It’s helping me remain positive for a potentially fun day to come.

ENJOY….MICHAEL!

G-Land on March 30th 2010

G-Land woke me up this morning with the beautiful sound of a new swell.  It was the first time since I arrived that my walk up to the beach was overly exciting.  I wish I didn’t have to write this, but from early morning on through sunset, the wind was the only element out of sync for a high quality day to happen at G-Land.

G-Land
could have been epic.  Full moon, strong south swell about 205 degrees, and very few surfers in the jungle.  I watched Speedies draw the lumped up swell through the high tide, the Ledge receive some explosive peaks at the tides opposite end, Money Trees handle everything, and about 5 Bombora sets break in the later afternoon.  It was difficult to see everything have the potential to be working all in one day, but IT DIDN’T.  And that was  because one element, the proper wind, was missing.

By 4:30, a powerful storm front came across Grajagan Bay and brought with it a booming thunderstorm and dropped a solid amount of rain.  It was refreshing to sit under the 2 new bale’s out front and watch, feel, and smell the storm go passed us.

Hoping for a more in sync day tomorrow.
Until then….MICHAEL

Welcome back to G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp Mr George, aka Mr Coca Cola, perhaps the guy who has spent the most amount of days in G-Land than anybody else?! A legend in his own right, he knows the G-Land Surf like the back of his hand, he’s in his 50′s and he’s fit as a fiddle, rides a variety of surfboards and surfs 2-3 times a day, and outpaddles everybody!

G-Land was about 3-4ft in the morning with (more…)
