G-Land ended up being o.k today. The onshore seemed to be picking up so we organized a group of 10 people to check out reverse G where the wind should have been offshore judging by the conditions and the forecast we had. Loaded the boat full of boards, food, water and some beers for the ride home of course. After a 45 minute boat ride it was still onshore even though it was facing the opposite direction. The swell didn’t seem to be hitting it right either so we just ended up coming back.

We were back by 10:00am and there were still 2 beers drank so the spirits were still high. Most of the crew jumped out of the boat straight into the lineup and the rest of us followed soon after. The wind dropped off and swung offshore but stayed really calm most of the day. It was a little inconsistent but everybody got some good ones at money trees that were a little overhead and even some fun sized smaller ones down launching pads. I seen a few nice barrels and even managed to tuck into a couple as well.

Great to be back at G-Land and looking forward to spending some time here.

G-Land on May 9th 2010

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

G-Land stayed strong.  Decent size swell still coming through with the largest sets getting up to 14 foot faces.  Ledge and Upper Money Trees were definitely the better part’s of the reef to be surfing at.  I’m sure that Kong’s had some sizable sets up there, but I couldn’t really tell from where I was at and there has been no stories told to me about it.

Headed down to Tiger Tracks in the early morning hoping to get a few fun right-handers.  A little bumpy but once it cleaned up, it was good fun.  The mid-sized waves…about head-high…were the gems.  Not bowling like it can, but still holding a fun transition to play with.  On the way back, the Ledge looked pretty impressive and well worth jumping off the boat to catch one nice wave in.

The after-lunch session was great.  There were some truly high-quality barrels coming through Money’s and every so rarely, a train would come from outside Ledge and run all the way down the reef into Money Trees.  WOW!!!  I never got so lucky, but I saw a few of them grind down the line and they came complete with hoots from the spectators.

And we had good wind for the second half the day…

G-land on April 23rd 2010

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

G-Land experiences just expanded for me today.  For me and 14 other guests. Everything was set last night to make an adventurous day of April 23rd, 2010.  I’ve been considering making the decision for the past 3 weeks, trying to get a substantial degree of confidence to set off and check out the east side of the Blambangan Peninsula…. Reverse G!

The conditions were right.  There was still swell (about 6-10 foot faces at Money Trees), the morning winds were keeping me confident in my decision, and the group was positive and open to whatever would happen.  When we entered the reef pass after about 1 hour of cruising and finally beached the boat, there was only one decision remaining.  Surf the Left or surf the Right.  We all took the dingy back out the pass and situated ourselves on the Right.

Plenty of sets for all of us.  This particular reef pass contour took the swell, stood it up on a well defined peak and set up a long, sloping wave face for about 100 yards…then…readjusted the swell to horseshoe on the inside, wall up and throw over if it was the right one.  It subtly reminded me of a similar set up on this side of the peninsula that I’m sitting on right now.  But I don’t want to make too much of a comparison to G-Land proper because this is a very difficult place to match up to.

Many thanks to Bobby for his generosity and willingness to ensure that his guests are enjoying themselves.

Surf out front was claimed to be really fun for a couple of hours when the wind was down.  Still hitting Money Trees and still lining up a few barrels.

November 8th 2009

Monday, November 9th, 2009

It was a slow, relaxing day today.  Seems odd, but giving it a good thought, G-Land can be so far from a slow and relaxing experience.  Maximum set size…trying to stay positive….was head-high.  But it was a test of patience to wait for those rare ones.  One more day of offshores, but the south element has been getting a little more dominant the past 2 days.

All the serfs surfed king Kongs.  I buzzed down to the end of the rainbow, dug my hand into the Money pot, but got conned by the little green-draped man a handful of times.  Decided to shift my approach to the backdoor for one last push of luck.  Sneaked  in over the ledge and snuck out through a hole in the wall and then took the slow low tide walk back home with that beautiful golden coin stashed deep in my back pocket.
